What causes a washing machine to leak during a random wash load ; and how do you prevent it ?

I was washing pillows and the load became unbalanced . I made an adjustment and thought all was well , but when the washer stopped , there was water under the washer . It did not happen again ; but I wonder what caused it .What causes a washing machine to leak during a random wash load ; and how do you prevent it ?
i am a service tech for major appliances and has had this happen numerous times... what happened is that when the washer was spinning it also was doing an injection spray... well the tub was off balance and the injection spray went over the top of the washer tub causing the water on the floor... i'm sure you didnt hurt anything, but next time i would wash your pillows at a laundry mat in a front load washer...What causes a washing machine to leak during a random wash load ; and how do you prevent it ?
I agree with Kirk D.....The load being unbalanced would have caused the water spraying during the spin cycle, to shoot over the top of the tub. Since it didn't happen again after that, don't go to all the trouble of looking for a cracked hose...Such a hose would leak all the time, not only when washing pillows.
Okay..I've fixed this myself.

It's probably a small split in the drainage hose that comes out from the pump. You have to take off the front of the machine (most people don't know that you don't fix a washing machine from the back) and replace the hose. It's actually a one-piece unit that includes the hookups on both ends because they're sealed on.

You remove the front by taking off the sides pieces of the ';control panel'; on top and then popping the clips (you'll see them). Depending on the machine there may be some screws that have to be removed. Grab the entire cabinet by the sides, and lift up and forward. It may be seated on the bottom, so wiggle it gently.

You can go on line to get better instructions. Just go to DIY sites, not the manufacturers, because that won't give you this type of repair help.
Overloading.

Wash pillows in a front-loading, no agitator washer next time.
