Is it safe to wash a feather comforter in a home washing machine?

Is it ok to wash a queen size feather bed comforter blanket in my washing machine at home, or do i have to take it to a dry cleaners?

if im able to do this at home, how do i dry it without making it lumpy? Is it safe to wash a feather comforter in a home washing machine?
Down filled and feather comforters should only be machine washed and not dry cleaned. The chemicals the cleaners use lessen the insulation value of the feathers/down creating a comforter that is now not as warm thereby defeating the purpose of having such a great luxury item. If your machine is not large enough then go to a local laundromat and use an oversized machine there. It is best if you do not use fabric softener..just laundry soap and dry..no dryer sheets either. You can dry them in the dryer...toss in a couple of new tennis balls to keep the comforter from bunching up, or you can air dry it..shaking down the feathers/down after it is dry in either situation. Do not wash a comforter like this if there are wear spots or tears in the cotton..you must repair it first or you will end up with feathers everywhere and an unbelievable mess. These should always be used with a duvet cover as they are not meant to be washed as often as a polyester comforter..just wash the duvet cover and air out the feather/down duvet often. Is it safe to wash a feather comforter in a home washing machine?
follow the manufacturer care label for the proper cleaning of it. I would send it out anyway as a feather comforter can become extremely heavy when washing and destroy your washer and the comforter. Also never dry a feather comforter in your dryer. If it comes apart it can cause a dryer fire. Recently went to repair one that a feather comforter came apart in and found it completely charred inside. Yes the feathers are treated but under extreme heat they will still smolder and can set the lint in your dryer on fire long after you remove the comforter from the machine. Needless to say in this case it destroyed the machine but a house fire was avoided barely and the outcome could have been worse if the owner had not called a repairman when they did. Take it to the dry cleaner.
No, the queen sized comforter will be too big to properly wash, rinse and spin in a home machine. You may take it to the cleaners or if you want to do it yourself, do it at the laundrymat in the BIG machine. To do this, bring a small amount of laundry detergent and add it to the machine before the dry comforter. Choose the cycle that is Warm/cold (wash rinse) and let it run. Do not add fabric softener.

When it is done, put it in the dryer on MEDIUM heat and add about 6 new tennis balls to the drum. Dry for about 1 and a half hours and re-arrange the comforter every 15 minutes or so to avoid it balling up. Even if it feels dry after an hour, do not stop! Let it go for at least 90 minutes... Bring a good book.
I only take mine to the dry cleaner. A friend of mine tried washing hers and ruined it.

If you don't have a cover over it, invest in one. That way you don't have to clean it as often.
I wouldn't do it. It'll never be the same. Take it to the dry cleaners and use a duvet when it's on your bed.
It should have a care label on it, but if it doesn't, I would let the cleaners clean it to be on the safe side.
