How do people wash clothes without a washing machine?

You wash them by hand. With detergent. How do people wash clothes without a washing machine?
One of two ways, depending on how much money they have available. Most common? Go to the local laundromat, and use their machiens for about $1.25/load.

Or, use your bathtub to wash your clothes- just add some mild dishwasher detergent, and handwash. How do people wash clothes without a washing machine?
Well, you can do it the old fashioned way and scrub them out by hand in your tub or sink. Or you can lug all your laundry off to a laundromat and pay to have them washed.
In my early years as a mom i lived in a small one bedroom apartment with no washer and the laundrymat a mile away and no car..i also used cloth diapers. So i use to wash my clothes by hand in the bathtub. Actually was good exercise...filled the tub..put in some washing soap..got in with my feet and agitated the clothes by walking around in it for about 15 minutes..then would drain the tub and rinse each piece by hand and wring them out by hand..jeans are a pain but if you want clean clothes and have no washer you have to do what you have to do.
Do what we had to do, use a Washboard. Dad would not let my sister and me wash just two pair of jeans in the washing machine because it wasn't a full load.(they were new jeans and we wanted to shrink them) We always had to use the washboard. I still have that old washboard, but now it's been stained, finished and is hanging up on the kitchen wall. It looks better as a decoration.Bye And I'm not one of the ,';Old Folk'; like smokey said!
Buy a washboard. You can find them at rummage sales sometimes or at antique stores or you can actually buy newer ones still. Then you can use a washtub if you wanna do it outdoors like the old folks did or you can simply do it in your bathtub or sink.
Go to the laundromat. duh.
My first inclination would be to answer ';by hand! DUH!'; but you also have the option of going to the laundromat. washing by hand can really be pain, especially if you have a lot of laundry.
